TWO PROBLEMS:

Just two, not really. But two issues are facing us.

What is the Church? How would you define her? The definitions are as numerous as the stars in the sky, almost. I don't know how we'll ever get on the same page.

What is a disciple? How would you define one? Try to get everyone together on this.

If we could ever answer these questions with unity, we might get somewhere.

I'll bite at the second one ...

Discipleship is learning to believe Jesus and believe like Jesus.

That's not original with me, but it's the best definition I know of because it's grounded in faith (trust/dependency). Too many other definitions of discipleship are about imitating Christ, which often just leads to new kinds of legalism around a new agenda.

Most of the new discipleship stuff I see beat people up for not 'doing it right,' but there's little about God and what he does. Ultimately, what makes Christians different than others is not their zeal or obedience, but their trust in a God who is bigger than all that.

Good questions.

To me the issue is primarily about unity.

A common ecclesiology is not the basis for unity.

A common method of discipleship is not the basis for unity.

Unity is a function of our Divine Identity--a true Gift of the Spirit.

Unity is not something we create, it is something we embrace.

In my study of history and revivalism, unless we start from this point, we will end in division and denominationalism.
