Are Christians ready for this?

The Wentzville Journal, Sunday, March 4, 2007 cover article reads: "Are Christians ready for this?" Owners of a new nightclub say county needs some good clean fun. The Exodus, an all-ages night club promoting Christian values and family entertainment, will likely open in the fall.

The $2.5 million 100,000 square foot nightclub is the first of the two phases of an alcohol and smoke free facility to include a cafe, bowling alley, rock-climbing wall, performance area and video arcade, and possibly a cinema.

What is the significance of the question or article title? Are Christians ready for this? What is the meaning behind the question? Good or bad idea?

Well, Christians may be ready for this, but what about pre-Christians? Must we continue to built attractional facilities that cost big bucks? And do we really think we will attract non-believer's if it has enought "Wow" factor or is cool enough? I don't know about your town, but I can find one or more cafes, bowling alleys, rock-climbing walls, preformance areas, and cinemas in my town. And guess what, they will be filled with pre-Christians and I'll bet you if I hang out a little while I'll establish dialog with some of them. The nightclub owners are most likly wonderful people with good intentions, but ...

My prediction is that this business fails. I've seen it happen time and again.

If the point is just to create a "mirror" of the world, without alcohol and smoke and with Christian values, then I'm against it.

Once again we'd be marginalizing the message of Christ so that only people who are already aware of it and agree with it are impacted by it. What kind of "ministry" is that?

I don't care how well it's done.

You know, there's a raft of Christian movies out right now: "Three" from the Ted Dekker book. "The Last Sin Eater" from Francine Rivers' book. "House" is coming from Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker book.

I'm for these entertainments, because they are trying to take the redemption story into the world. But, unfortunately, they grabbed onto a flawed, in my opinion, marketing strategy of tying the movie's release to a local campaign in a Christian bookstore.

I've read all those books. I wanted to see all of those movies. But none of the Christian bookstores near me, I guess, ponied up the money for the tie-in.

But I wanted to see them NOT because they were Christian. I wanted to see them because they are great stories, period.

We need to get our Story out of the ghetto of consumerized Christianity. I say that, while I have a book of my own being considered by a Christian publisher. So I know I'm at odds with myself, but ...

I'm still for the smoke filled rooms where drinks are allowed and where swearing is heard. I can almost see Jesus talking to the bartender.

As mentioned by Allen, our town also has smoke and drink free places of entertainment. These places are full of the reached and the unreached.

I'm not for another place to hide out from the world, her people and its evils. We'll have to wait on the verdict here.

By the way, don't we already have this deal going in our larger churches? (Gymns, pool tables, youth cafe's, music and other entertainment, a slew of activities for fun, a place to hang out without the smoke, cussing, alcohol etc.)

What am I missing here?

I'm a huge fan of ministry. And I'm a huge fan of beer. "Family fun" places are fine - just like suburban living is "fine". But I'd rather not... Neither would most of the broken and needy people I know.

So I guess this Christian isn't ready for it!

Isn't it funny or is it sad what we will do to insulate ourselves from the world while continuing to cater to our own needs, wishes, and perceived fear?

This looks more like another inside inside idea to make money on the fears and consumerism of the "saints".

Stuff like this flips my switch!
