Ain't this the truth...sadly so?

Western Confession of Faith - presented by Michael Goheen and posted on Goodmanson.com

I believe in Science Almighty. I believe in the power of human reason disciplined by the scientific method to understand, control, and change our world.

I believe in Technology and a Rational Society, its only begotten Sons which have the power to renew our world.

I believe in the spirit of Progress. I believe that a science based technology and a rationally organized society will enable me to realize my ultimate goals - freedom, happiness and the comforts of material abundance.

I believe in economism. I believe that the abundance of consumer goods and experiences and the leisure time and freedom to consume them will make me happy. To this I commit myself with all my money, time, energy and resources. Amen.

Finally - someone put words to the society I have been living in. Now we have a clearly defined set of lies to rebuke!

For whom is this supposed to be a confession of faith?

Clearly the man who was originally quoted, Michael Goheen, and unfortunately most of the modern church.
I currently work as a custodian at a church of 3,500 (and yes, I desperately want out) and all I ever see is how the church continually votes on making their building, their programs, and their wallets bigger and better. Questions such as "Is this really what God meant by stewardship?" and "Is that a biblical use of our money?" constantly circle within their congregation yet remedies are never enacted.
One of the conferrences that they hosted a few years back stated that "The church is a business and should be run like one." Unfortunately for them, that statement rang too true. They package and program Jesus into a cool looking box and give Him away at the door with their Ipods for whoever brings the most friends.
Welcome to today's traditional church, my friend!

Sorry, I have to challenge that. What you describe is not, in my experience, today's traditional church. MAYBE today's traditional mega church, but I wonder even about that.

Beware of painting with wide brushes.

Mike, are you really sure? Maybe you like the traditional church? Maybe you like how she serves you and meets your needs. Are you really sure about challenging the above?

Do you have blinders on? Is there room for tiny brushes when it comes to failed disciple making?

I love the Body of Christ the Church.I grieve at what we the church as an institution have done to the Mission of Christ.I wonder if Jesus is grieved.

Bob, you know that I agree there are problems with the church. But I do NOT see this piece as anything near what would be called a "Confession of Faith."

Has the church neglected her mission? Certainly. But not to embrace "Science Almight" and "Progress" and the rest.

No, where the church has gone astray, and it has, is in trading it's mission (everyone all together now...) for complacency and materialism. Not for science, technology, etc.

I can accept the last point of the "confession" (I believe in economism...etc.) but not the rest.

In fact, much of the modern church (at least what I'm familiar with) shies away from Science Almight -- see the creation/evolution debate.
