I Confess

I read "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown. I am glad I read the book as painful as it was at times. Painful in the sense that truth was undermined so cleverly. However, Dan Brown is one of the best writers I have ever read from a literary standpoint. I was pulled into the storyline and read the book in about three or four days. If you are willing to have your faith challenged, read the book -it was well worth the ride. But be prepared for sacreligious mumbo jumbo. At times I found myself speechless and gasping for breath.

With the movie coming out in May we must pray for opportunities to seize the moment as people will be talking about Jesus and Mary and the truth of God's Word.

Dan Brown was extremly crafty as he rewrote the Bible at various points. I found myself saying, "It's a good thing I have a strong foundation because without it one could buy his arguments however subtle and sometimes bold heresy and distortion." At times I feared for Dan Brown and the day he will stand before God and give an account for his words. He was more than convincing and many unbelievers and weak believers could easily be affected negatively. How much will be included in the movie I do not know, but I will be prepared to give some responses to those who ask.

There you go -- "I Confessed It All"

I have not read Dan Brown's book, but I hear tell that he is a great storyteller and a so-so novellist (is that jealousy rearing it's ugly head?). :)

But, Bob, I think your point that, with the movie coming out especially, we need to be able to give an answer is a strong point.

This is the way Christians will impact the world...not by publishing "response" books debunking Brown's fiction that are published within the Christian sub-culture and for the Christian sub-culture. But in answering the lies and distortions he uses to tell his fictional story with the truth about The Truth.

I've been avoiding Brown's book because his technique is, I've heard, weak (to put it kindly), but I may have to pick it up -- at the Library of course.

Visit Barnes and Nobles, buy a cup of coffee and sit in a corner and read a chapter or so. You'll see he has skill worthy of being noted in spite of his sin.

You will buy the book after that.

I'm just making a point from a laymen's perspective.

I read "Cracking the DaVinci's Code" by James Garlow adn Peter Jones. I recommend that people in the church read it. It clearly helps Christians know how to deal with the noval. The agenda of Brown is reviving paganism!!!

I totally agree about the opportunities and concerns with the book and movie release. I attended a training seminar at a faith based human services organization back in December and the speaker, unrelated to the training, made a comment about the book and said that everybody should at least take a look and consider the authors main points for a balanced view. This prompted great concern. I equate this to attending a 3rd grade field day that would have a station where the children could try their hand at bird hunting. The children may have watched their fathers shoot the gun, even flipped through the owner’s manual, but are they ready to fire a loaded gun? I am fearful that many are in this position in the Church. They may have watched someone fire or even briefly skimmed the “owner’s manual” but do they know how to handle the truth? Can you just envision a group of 3rd graders in a parking lot firing in multiple directions? How will a majority of the “Americanized” Church handle the objections that those outside and inside the Church when questioned on the false teachings? Will it look like a bunch of 3rd graders in a parking lot firing loaded shot guns? Jim Garlow notes that The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown – along with the movie – has offered the church one of the greatest evangelistic opportunities ever. The great concern is that if the Body is not grounded in the Word and the history of the Church, they will not be able to “be ready” to give an answer. This will be a huge challenge and opportunity. Garlow is planning a series of Sermons that might be good to check out around the movie release date in May. Garlow also has several resources in addition to the one that drinkdp mentioned. http://www.jimgarlow.com/cdvcode/10_DaVinci.pdf God Help Us...

I say thank you to DP and annonymous for mentioning Dr. Barlow's resources in this post.

I have added a link on my blog to Dr. Barlow's site where he has 10 resources to help us understand and help us help other separate Truth from Fiction.

If I was in the pastorate at this moment we would make this a huge deal with sermons and resources being made available. But since I am not in the pastorate I am at least steering leaders in the right direction to the resources that will help them help others.
